There are a handful of weeks in my life that stand out in my memory. Mostly the obvious ones...the week I moved to Lawrence to start college at KU, the week I became engaged, the week of Drew & my wedding, the week we found out we were pregnant. I knew this week would be an addition to the list; after all, we found out we were having a little boy this week. What I didn't know was there would be another reason that this was a week to remember. As they say, when it rains it pours.
Just over a week ago, one of my colleagues and friends resigned her position in my department. It was rather sudden and resulted in the rest of us getting together for a brainstorming session on how we were going to move forward under these new circumstances. The rest was a bit of a whirlwind, but to make a long story short, I got a new job! We did some restructuring within the department and I will now be in charge of our annual National Championship and Golf Classic - the 500 person golf tournament that precedes our annual Conference & Trade Show every year. In addition, we will be hiring a new employee, who will report to me, to handle some of my previous meeting planning/board of director duties. While I will still have ultimate responsibility for those duties, this new employee will allow me to free up some time to focus on the tournament.
The rest of 2008 is going to be insane! In addition to getting ready for our little boy's arrival I will now be learning a new job, hiring and training a new employee and preparing to be out of the office for 3 months of maternity leave. Like I said, when it rains it pours! But while it all feels a bit overwhelming at the moment, I couldn't be more excited. I tend to perform better under pressure and I am so excited about this new opportunity.
As icing on the cake, my week ended with a visit from my parents. Dad & Drew spent 2 days on the golf course while Mom & I turned 85 lbs of tomatoes into homemade salsa. It's become an annual tradition and we are getting quite good at it! Some other highlights include date night at the club on Friday, a quick tour of all the work Drew has done at KU's new & improved football complex (it's quite impressive if I do say so myself), burgers at the house on Saturday and lots of baby talk. It was wonderful to have them here.
The week will end on a fairly relaxing note. I plan to spend the rest of today doing a bit of laundry, getting myself organized for the baby tasks that need to be accomplished soon (arrange for delivery of the new nursery furniture, select daycare centers to interview, prepare to register for baby supplies, complete our hospital preregistration paperwork, research pediatricians, etc.) and perhaps even crack open a new book. A perfect way to end this week to remember!
