Doctor/Ultrasound Report

Today was ultrasound day. We learned and saw so much!

  • It's still a boy. We again saw a clear image of all boy parts - in fact, the testicles got a reaction out of the ultrasound tech who declared "those are big ones"! (Drew grinned.)
  • He is head down and in position for delivery. I now know the especially bony and annoying body part that constantly digs into my rib cage is not a heel as I guessed, but is his tailbone.
  • We clearly saw his heart and watched it beating. The heart rate was perfect.
  • We got a great shot of his diaphragm and could actually see him breathing in and out. The tech said that is a rare shot. If she is impressed, I am too!
  • He was moving his mouth and even stuck his tongue out at us!
  • Based on all of his measurements, they estimate that he currently weighs 6.4 lbs. - give or take just under a pound. That puts him in the 69th percentile and on track to be between 7 and 7 1/2 pounds at full term. Perfect.
  • I forgot to mention, the tech told me I looked littled for being in my 35th week. I wanted to hug her.

After the ultrasound I headed in to see my doctor. Fairly routine here as well:

  • She reviewed the ultrasound measurements and results and confirmed that all is progressing perfectly.
  • This week I measured normally (as opposed to measuring big last time). Since the ultrasound ruled out extra fluid or an extremely large baby, the last measurement was most likely either a fluke or because he still hadn't "dropped".
  • I mentioned my back pain and contractions and she gave me some coping strategies and stretching positions to try. She said it was a common occurrence.
  • I received instructions on who and when to call when I start experiencing labor.
  • There was one minor hiccup. There were proteins in my urine today. That could mean several things: not enough water, signs of preeclampsia, or some sort of kidney infection or issue. My blood pressure was okay today so that's a good sign. And I haven't had headaches or vision problems which also indicate preeclampsia. But to be cautious I have the pleasure of gathering my urine for an entire 24-hour period for analysis. My friend Jana and I have been laughing about that process this afternoon. Can you imagine someone at the office coming across my "collection" in the fridge in our office break room?!! I have decided to spare us all the embarrassment and work from home tomorrow. Unlike my usual anxiety ridden self, I'm not really worried about the protein thing. We have been blessed with such an easy and healthy pregnancy I see no reason for that to change now. Or, maybe it is because I'm still riding the high of images of our little guy being so active and normal and healthy - and the fact that he is already 6 lbs. means even birth today would not be scary. So, regardless of what we find out after the urine analysis, I know my little boy will be fine. Which makes me fine.

That about sums it up! I'll try to get to a scanner later today so I can post some of his latest pictures. He's quite handsome if I do say so myself!
