Our Unplanned 4th of July

Despite it being Jackson's first 4th of July, we started this holiday weekend with absolutely nothing planned. It didn't turn out that way.

On the 4th, Drew played golf in the morning while Jackson and I baked and frosted sugar cookies and whipped up some homemade ice cream. (Homemade ice cream is my 4th of July tradition. It's just not 4th of July without it!) Gram & Grump were in town so they stopped by for an afternoon visit. Then we were off to a BBQ with our friends: The Browns and Laura Russell. I had intentions of taking all sorts of pictures - Willie grilling his masterpiece steaks, Jasmine & Jayson playing with Jack, Jana, Laura & I lounging with a beer (my first in almost 2 years...it was yummy!). You get the idea. As it turned out, the batteries in my camera died just as we loaded Jack into the stroller and headed out. (Nothing like grabbing a six pack, putting the kid in the stroller and walking to a BBQ at your friends' house less than a block away!) So, this is my only picture from the 4th of July.
We had a fantastic time. One of the best meals I've had in ages: steak, baked potatoes, salad, corn and, of course, homemade ice cream. Yum-O! Jack finally hit the wall shortly before 9:00 so we headed home. No fireworks for us this year, but it was an awesome day just the same.

On the 5th we loaded up the family and took a road trip to Riley, KS to visit our good friends Dustin, Brandie & Ashlyn Stoddard. We picked up some Famous Dave's BBQ on the way and had lunch at their house. It was so fun to see the kiddos together (pics here). And we got to see Dustin & Brandie's newly finished, and totally awesome, new basement. As always, we left wishing we lived closer. Now it's their turn to come to Lawrence!
I didn't get the laundry done. I didn't finish Jackson's baptism invitations. And I didn't start making my packing lists for our upcoming vacation. Instead, we had a totally unplanned weekend full of good food and great friends. And I can't think of a better way to spend a holiday!
